Jan Patočka (1907-1977) was a Czech philosopher and phenomenologist and is regarded as one of the most important philosophers of the 20 th century. Care for the soul lies at the heart of Patočka’s thought. With his exploration of the basis of a shared European identity, his emphasis on freedom and truth, on the value of the arts, and on the importance of civil society, Patočka’s ideas are now more relevant than ever.
