The French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine open up connections right across the arts. Verlaine in particular left an amazing musical legacy. This exciting live concert, curated by the award-winning broadcaster and master programmer Iain Burnside, featured Verlaine settings by Debussy as well as songs based on poems by Ronsard, Villon, Baudelaire, Hugo and Apollinaire (among others), set by composers Arthur Honegger, Gabriel Fauré, Emmanuel Chabrier, Jacques Ibert, Olivier Messiaen, André Caplet, Georges Bizet and Francis Poulenc.
Giving the performances were acclaimed singers Tereza Gevorgyan, Heather Lowe, Matthew Durkan, Hanna-Liisa Kirchin, Timothy Dickinson, Katherine Crompton, Adam Gilbert, Roisin Walsh, Trystan Griffiths and Gyula Nagy, and the pianists Nick Fletcher, Hannah Quinn and Eda Seppar - all future stars of the opera and concert world.
Whether you were an existing fan of classical song or had never attended this kind of event before, the concert provided a wonderful opportunity to experience up close great music and some of the world’s most talented voices.
