The event will examine connections between French and English literature from the 19th century to more modern times, with a particular focus on the influence of the French symbolists.
Speakers include Matthew Creasy from the University of Glasgow, who has recently published a critical edition of Arthur Symons' seminal work The Symbolist Movement in Literature. We will also hear from poet, literary critic, editor and publisher Anthony Rudolf who has made many translations of French poetry over the years, including books by Yves Bonnefoy, Claude Vigée and Edmond Jabès.
Dylan Read will give a series of readings in French and English of poems by Verlaine, Rimbaud and Mallarmé and their English translators Symons, Gray and Dowson.
Don’t miss what promises to be a fabulous exploration of the highways and byways of French and English poetry.
