Verlaine and his Composers

Michael Corby, the Foundation’s benefactor, hosted an evening lecture and recital at the Reform Club on the 24th September. Richard Stokes, Professor of Lieder at the Royal Academy of Music, gave an overview of Verlaine’s life and works and discussed the composer’s extraordinary influence on composers and musicians. The mezzo-soprano Ciara Hendrick and the pianist Sholto Kynoch then gave a wonderful recital of Verlaine settings, ranging from well-known mélodies by Fauré and Debussy to little-performed songs by Charpentier and Saint-Saëns.
